There had to be a better way
My wife and I have been visiting San Carlos since 2005. We counted many of the local people of Guaymas, Empalme and San Carlos as friends and worked very hard to assimilate the language & culture.
However, we grew frustrated trying to learn on our own. (How far can you throw a Rosetta Stone CD? Pretty far.) We approached every adult learning center in Guaymas inquiring about formal Spanish language instruction; only to be told they did not offer such programs.
There had to be other tourists, visitors and residents that were as frustrated as we were. That is when we decided to open up a language school ourselves.
Humble beginnings
We choose the name Espanglish as a play on words. Not only would we teach Spanish to english-speaking tourists, visitors and expatriates, but would also teach English to spanish-speaking residents, visitors and tourists.
After much hard work and preparation, we opened our doors to students as the Espanglish - Institute of Language and Culture.
Casual and Comfortable Classroom Setting
The institute is located at 187-A on Ave H Sur (the main paved road heading into the Ranchitos), across from the Bomberos. It is a two story, cream colored home.

Professional Staff
- Carolina Roa, school headmistress-teacher, is a Mexican national born in Guaymas, holding TOEFL (ITSON-Guaymas) and TESOL (from Canadian English Institute-Toronto) advanced certifications. She is fluent in English, Spanish and Yaqui (having volunteered on a Yaqui reservation in Vicam for 6 months in 2006) and has traveled extensively throughout Mexico, the United States & Canada. Students will benefit from the variety of teaching methods she employs and enthusiasm she brings to the classroom.
- Peter ODwyer, founder-teacher, hails from Upstate, New York, holding an AOS Degree (SUNY-Albany) and TESOL (CEI-Toronto) advanced certification. A computer and controls systems administrator of 10+ years by trade, his teaching ranges from mentoring engineering students from North Eastern, RPI, MIT & écoles de France, conducting seminars and training factory personnel on computer & industrial controls systems and procedures.
